Artist's Profile

Andres Barrioquinto

“Some of my paintings are not meant to be beautiful.”

My work is likely to be more sharply individualized than the realist’s, and therefore more dramatically my own. I am more interested in exploring my soul rather than reflecting a bare world of clichéd ideas. My concepts revolve around man’s infinite struggle with his self and the chaos of insights within me.

“I paint the images so exaggerated and distorted that they take us away from the familiar world and into one of emotion and feeling, binding our fragmented existences as humans in the most macabre and yet real ways. In extremes, these expressions may turn into nightmarish apparitions.

“My art is also dynamic, constantly changing through time as I mature as an artist. I always experiment because, as an artist, I am never contented with one dormant style; I want change and innovation. I do not aim for perfection, but I may reach it when conditions become ideal.

“I am always alert to any inevitable accident that may take place, as I often take advantage of it. My colors sometimes bleed or overlap to create a pleasing but unplanned effect. Surprises can always crop up. Artists are like magicians: they use illusions to create a desired effect, and though their use may sometimes be repetitive, they often create something striking.”
