“The sums of our differences” is an arithmetic addition of colonial dates for the Spanish occupancy and the Americans. “The sum” actually refers to the figurative summation of our influences from such foreign conquerors. The painting was rendered in a style that looks similar to mathematical flash cards used by elementary students to learn basic numerical operations. Basically, this mirrors the innocence of the minorities regarding the corruptive existence of such colonial discrepancies and the slow devastation of their own, dying culture and individual freedom.
