This painting basically depicts the two phases of affection, the first being ardent, passionate stage of longing while the latter, as depicted in the painting with a cold, monochromatic rendition of tones, demonstrates the frigid emotionless state that it grows into. If the painting is to be observed, it is evidently noticeable that the figure holding the roses is painted in a slightly colorful manner, while the other in a lifeless saturated state, thus providing a strong paradox of two contrasting emotions.
